BE (OR NOT)

After proclaimed that are free to be fully ourselves - as the Happiness is here, now - this Sunday the Lord Jesus continues the Sermon on the Mount declaring what we can be. Openly defying our naive consciousness of what we believe to be snooty and the authority of modern thought, which defines the human being around a certain idea of \u200b\u200bfreedom and paper - always infinite - of his alleged rights, the word of God announces that, in fact, we are so much more. Will settle for a small measure of mediocre existence would simply deny ourselves.

Being

"You are the salt of the earth," You are the light of the world "(Mt 5,13.14), debuted as the Master. And there is hardly a way to make audience (listen to the gospels of the next Sunday and see!). But neither of moral exhortation, who wants to lead his disciples to take unusual attitudes or postures of the soul. These words are simply a revelation of what man is. The form of the indicative - certainly not chosen at random rather than the conditional or imperative - do not leave any doubt. This is our first difficulty ourselves in listening to this - to tell the truth of all - Gospel: to accept the profound meaning, that is true, our life is not in our consciousness or in the secret of our dreams, but a word that comes from outside, in the heart of another who claims to know for right 's love. It is not easy for us to believe that the meaning of our existence is different from the everyday routine, the sequence of events that trivial and leaving when it ends in a song becomes a poem: "You live, you die, there is pain from which there ' and 'a thought that comforts you, it comes with the dogs, shake hands, they often pretend to be something, watching the sunset, you arrive late on the rain exploded rubble of life, become of the children, dreams do you dream of sand castles on the shore "( The human element , Jovanotti). The Lord Jesus seems to declare that there is a divine element in our being men and women, a quality of life which is the same stuff of which God has made that hard to believe, but beautiful: we are disciples of Christ we have a taste of history the light of the world.

Becoming

The joy of this indicator, however, suffered as realism, through the thrill of the hypothetical, "but if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be salted?" (5:13), and the absurdity of possible futures "can not be hidden is a city on a hill or lights a lamp puts it under a bushel "(5:14-15). After telling us what we are, the Master reminds us of the responsibility to become one. However, if we feel honored that scared before the revelation of the gospel, it is worth asking what it means to be, and then and is now the light of the world and salt of the earth. Maybe everyone needs to drop these questions in your own life, to understand how and when now a disciple of Christ can lay back and light flavor and depth to the reality that sad stage costumes of the wretched and sad passions, in which we live now as if something was worth the other. Maybe you could start with the courage to speak truth in most family, friends or siblings in the communities to which we belong, to have greater thirst for justice in the workplace, in polis that all or building or destroy, to show with facts that, before asking the other awards or endorsements, we Christians are first prepared to lose our lives - and then privileges, powers, visibility - but to announce the Life we have encountered. Maybe we could go on thinking that the mild form can not be our actions and our words are only a few, privileged situations, but always. In the church as the street, at work as a family. For the kingdom of God is a yard is always open.

In relation

Today's Gospel it ends very appropriately with a fantastic imperative that rekindles the nostalgia of the first pages of the Bible (cf. Gen 1.3), those in which it is said that everything is about to begin, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven "(Mt 5:16). After telling us that we are essentially light and that this fate is also entrusted to our freedom, the Lord can give a command, who does not want to dismal narcissism, but in the warmth of fraternal relations. As recalled by the prophet is our light can arise "as the dawn" (Isa. 58.8) and shine "like the noonday" (58.10) only if our life is to "share your bread with the hungry, in 'bring home the poor, the homeless, clothe the naked when you see' and if we do these things' without neglecting the family "(Is 58.7). In fact, just opening ourselves to others in service and solidarity, it happens that our wounds - our need to be bleeding love - "you heal soon" (58.8). Always run the risk that fine words with which God is able to intercept our conscience become easily sequins and trophies that we try to show 'with excellence of speech or of wisdom "(1 Cor 2:1). The good news that we taste and beauty deserves a better answer, wishes fulfilled "in the weaknesses of ordinary acts of love, the only gestures that can express the" power of God "(2.5).
